在浪漫主义后期,勃拉姆斯最大的贡献,除了弦乐四重奏,就是对交响乐身体力行的改革。这种改革,回归古典主义,又不尽是贝多芬式的古典主义,被称之为新古典主义。对比贝多芬时代,对于音乐现实而言,音乐史家朗格曾经说同样的河流,在勃拉姆斯是向后倒流的,而在贝多
芬则是向前涌进的。”对于音乐主旨而言,朗格说:“贝多芬是歌德的副本,勃拉姆斯是易卜生。”也就是说,勃拉姆斯更多内省,而不是贝多芬澎湃式的激流勇进,和他的后来者激进的马勒,也拉开了明显的距离。因此,勃拉姆斯的交响曲很出名,但很难演绎,他不如贝多芬和马勒那样可以在

加演勃拉姆斯和瓦格纳的两支曲子精彩,倒更能彰显芝加哥乐团的本色,和马泽尔本人的那么一点难得的幽默。看他一手挥舞着指挥棒,一手扶着指挥台的栏杆,总觉得像看一幅丰子恺先生画的那种水墨人物画,带动得勃拉姆斯也如一钩弯月,疏枝横斜起来。
